This month's One Little Word prompt was probably my favorite so far, besides the first one in January. We were tasked with creating a set of 9 mixed media cards, and then filling each of them in starting with the phrase I AM. This was the perfect project for my word Quality, this month, as I had already decided to make it my mission to refocus my word on the quality of my thoughts! So, here is what I cam up with :)
I decided that for the base of my cards I would use some heavy duty chipboard I had saved from somewhere, and cut it into nine pieces to fit these page protectors. Then I chose a light grey acrylic paint to use as my base on each of them. I did these cards in stages over the course of probably two weeks as I got time and layers of paint dried, etc.
For layer number two, I went through my stash of texture making materials (masks, textured paper, bubble wrap and other bits of things I've saved) and chose a few things to add some texture with some white paint. I used the pinkish natural paper (one of my favorite little finds!) as both a mask and a painted and glued on element. I also used corrugated cardboard as a stamp and painted some other handmade paper I had. Then I glued them all on and arranged my cards.
I didn't want to overdo it, and really wanted the words to stand out so for the final layer I just added some subtle stamping in both a light aqua and coral color using these cool texture stamps.
For the I AM title, I didn't have any letter stamps that were large enough, so I made some :) This is one of my new FAVORITE things to do and I really do hope to share my technique for this in the future. I just use an exacto knife and a sheet of self-adhesive craft foam to make them, and then I adhere them to a piece of cardboard. It was PERFECT for this project!!
The last step was filling in each statement. I had these pre-written on another sheet of paper since I kind of came up with them earlier in the month and just copied them over. My favorite one is the quote below on learning. This showed up in my Pinterest feed the day I read the new prompt and I couldn't believe how perfect it was!! It was exactly how I have been feeling :)
So, there you have it. I am still hoping to complete June's prompt, whatever that may be, despite the arrival of the baby and possibly inspired by my experience of welcoming our new family member into this world!
